Get ready to feast your eyes on the newly released Star Wars trailer for Episode 8: The Last Jedi. Plenty of mystery and a lot of big hints towards massive developments in lore, but one line, in particular, is getting fans in a frenzy. Spoilers ahead.
With a jump scare musical cue, what seemed to be the starry vastness of space becomes a stone under Rey on the rocky Island where Luke has been hiding; a planet called “Ahch-To,” home of the first Jedi Temple. Rey is breathing heavily as if exhausted. Could she be training in the ways of the Force under Luke’s tutelage?
We hear Luke say, “Breathe. Just breathe. Now reach out. What do you see?” over a clip of Rey standing toward the rising sun and a closeup of her hand surrounded by hovering rocks.
A brief glimpse of Carrie Fisher as Leia from behind, before Rey replies, “Light… Darkness…A balance.”
While Rey is replying, several voices can be heard whispering. It sounds as if it may be Leia saying “Help me, Obi-wan,” Obi-wan saying “Seduced by the dark side,” and Yoda saying “Surrounds us, binds us.”.
We see images of books on a shelf, a page in a book with the symbol of the Jedi Order, and Kylo Ren’s smoking helmet lying broken and mangled on the floor. It seems as if it has been slashed with a lightsaber. Mechanized breathing that sounds a lot like Darth Vader can be heard beneath the music. Could this mean Kylo is turning away from the dark side? Destroying the mask that hides his true pull toward the light? The helmet that represents his admiration for Darth Vader?
“It’s so much bigger,” Luke says as the music blasts and tempo ramps up
An amazing series of shots, including the Millennium Falcon, BB-8 and Poe getting shot at, Finn in some sort of chamber, Rey and Kylo wielding lightsabers, Luke watching a building burn down, and the beginning of what looks to be an incredible space battle, all whiz by as Luke gives us the final line, the one that has the world wondering what he could possibly mean.
“It’s time for the Jedi to end.”
Luke seems to be saying the Jedi are over with… but could it mean something else?
It’s always possible that the line was clipped. There could be more to the full line in the movie. Maybe Luke was really going to say that “It’s time for the Jedi to end this war once and for all,” or “It’s time for the Jedi to end my nephew’s stupid life,” or even “It’s time for the Jedi to end the battle against space diabetes.” If that’s the case, we will just have to wait to see what the end of that sentence really might be.
On the other hand, if that sentence is complete, it could mean a few different things.
Luke could be angry at himself and with his failure and the failure of the Jedi ways, leading to the dark betrayal against his the Jedi and his family by his own nephew, Kylo Ren. The line could mean he does not want to help defeat Kylo as a Jedi. It could mean that he has no more faith in the Jedi at all.
Or Luke could actually be saying that the way of the Jedi is what must end. That a new way to use the force must be embraced. It seems likely that Luke is referring to the need for balance in the Force, something neither the Jedi nor the Sith were ever good at. The Jedi thought balance meant killing the Sith, but they were wrong. Could Luke be teaching Rey to embrace both sides of the force, not as Jedi or Sith, but as something new?
What do you think that cryptic line might mean?
